The Responsibilities of a CED

“My dog/cat is so spoiled!” To which my Mom will reply, “No they’re not. They are entitled. Besides, my dog owns his own pet store!"

Being a local, family owned and operated business, we draw most our customers from Arvada. We also provide employment for a select few in our community.

Unlike the CEOs of the big box pet stores, I have no golden parachute. I am happiest greeting customers, eating healthy, going for walks and carting. My concerns are far more centered on the health, happiness and wellbeing of our fur-customers than I am on the return of investment of our investor. (Sorry Dad!)

We can’t, don’t, and won’t claim to be the least expensive, just the best; the best in service, health, nutrition, fun and information for you and your fur-children. When you need and want advice and understanding, we want to be here to support you. Our products are limited on purpose. Our standards are quality and ethics.

The support you show us is appreciated and crucial. We thank you all for the fun we are having, the services we are providing and look forward to a happier, healthier future for all of our fur-children.

Olookun's Outlooks: In Memory of My Mama Magic

My beloved Mama Magic, Bruin’s Black Magic of Stehekin, passed over the rainbow bridge Friday evening 2-18-11. Along with my furless-Mom, Lori, Mama Magic was the co-Pawprietor and reason for the creation of Pet Empawrium.

My Mama Magic's immune system was compromised as a puppy from what our family believes to be outdated health and wellness care, treatment, and techniques. It was the search to help my Mama Magic return to health and live a quality life we were lead to understanding the need for more natural and healthier alternatives for all our canine and feline fur-kids. In the end immune mediated illness was too much for her to overcome. In true Mama Magic style, she passed peacefully, and, as usual, on her terms.

She is soooooo badly missed, but her memory and legacy will live on in Pet Empawrium and all who loved her.

Olookun's Outlooks: Mother's Day

I have two Moms! How lucky am I!!! First, there is my fur-Mom. She carried me, gave birth to me, and still loves me. Then there is my furless-Mom. She delivered me, and made sure that my gene pool was deep and noble.

So, how do I see my Moms??? My Moms are those I depend on for love,nurturing, protection, comfort, understanding, compassion, companionship, hugs, belly rubs, walks, play, and a bazillion other things that they provide with devotion, dependability, optimism, joy and LOVE! Let's face it! I have a great life!

If I could make it to the mall or had fingers and an opposable thumb for the internet, I might be able to find get something spectacular for them for Mother's Day! But I know that cuddling, face-licks, and staying out from underfoot will substitute any day!

Magic's Musing: Do You Believe in Magic?

My mom does. And she says that the thousands of people who have had the pleasure of meeting me think so too. And "Magic" is just what I am.

I am an April Fool! I will be eight years old this April! But, there was a time my mom wondered if I would make it a year.

I was the pushy, stubborn, arrogant puppy of my litter. Not exactly the epitome of a Newf, but I was smart and I loved the water. That was enough to make me Newfish! My family took me just about everywhere, so my dad dubbed me Amex because they couldn't leave home without me.

Then it happened. The vomiting, diarrhea, skin rashes, lameness. I felt awful. How could this be? I was only four month old. My vet didn't have a clue, so my mom tried another vet, and another one, and, finally, an internal medical specialist and dermatologist. They said I had parvo and a food allergy? But I was VACCINATED! So, the specialists put me on antibiotics, steroids, antiemetics and a prescription diet. *Blech* Mom wasn't sold though. She thought that was way overboard for a four month old Newfie. So, she went home and turned to the internet. Boy! Was she determined and motivated! It lead her to a naturopath. With his help and guidance, I was introduced to an incredible new diet of whole, fresh, natural and raw food! Drug and prescription diet free, I began to heal.

So, with that ugly experience behind me, I inspired mom to keep learning. She turned that passion and education into Pet Empawrium & Spaw, a place to learn about and share thoughts on complimentary, alternative and integrative fur-kid care.

Today, I am retired. I hang out in my mountain cabin sleeping. I grace the store with my presence once in a while and still go for the occasional swim. I have passed the reins on to my son, who is now Chief Executive Dog. But my Mom says it is my legacy will still live on.
